Arguably the greatest race horse of all time, in 1973 Secretariat won racing’s Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. No horse had won the Crown since Citation in 1948. Secretariat didn’t just win it at the Belmont, but ran away with it by an enormous 31 lengths. In recent years Funny Cide and Smarty Jones both tantalized racing fans by winning the first two races, but each ultimately fell short. And the legend of Secretariat grows with each near miss. The horse is probably more popular today than he was 30 years ago. The featured serigraph portrays the horse in full stride, nearly airborne, characteristically stretching toward the finish line. The red-hued horse and his jockey (usually Ron Turcotte) wear their unique blue and white check silks, derived from the colors of Meadow Stable. Meticulous in detail, Neiman also captures the white wisps in the cannon and fetlock. It is a testament to the horse’s greatness that Neiman has released prints of him three times. Among humans, only Muhammad Ali and Frank Sinatra have been so honored. Truly exclusive company. LeRoy Neiman previously released Secretariat (Big Red) in 1973 and Secretariat II in 1990. The latest painting and print were commissioned in part to benefit the Secretariat Foundation, which is devoted to the study, health and welfare of thoroughbred horses. All Neiman collectors will treasure this portrait of a great champion.
